Overview

Combat in The Clans is turn-based. Your clan members and the enemy take turns in an order determined by their agility and current health. Each round, every living combatant gets one action. Combat continues until one side is defeated, someone runs away, or 50 rounds have passed.

Combat Commands

During combat, when it is one of your members' turns, you choose an action:

KeyAction
AAttack. Strike the first available enemy.
SSpecific attack. Choose which enemy to target.
1-9Attack the enemy at that position number.
KCast a spell. Choose from your known spells and pick a target.
ERead a scroll. Use a scroll item from your inventory.
IParry. Skip your turn and do nothing (sometimes called idle).
RRun away. Attempt to flee the battle.
PPlayer stats. Display the current member's full statistics.
FFight to the death. Commit to the battle -- no more running.
DUse default action. Execute your preset action (see section 5.6).
?Combat help. Display the combat help screen.
If you do not choose an action, the default is to attack (A).

Turn Order

Each round, the game recalculates the order in which combatants act. Characters with higher agility tend to act first. Your current health also matters -- wounded characters slow down. There is a small random factor so the order is not perfectly predictable.

Spells in Combat

Press K to cast a spell. You will be shown your known spells and asked to choose one. Each spell costs spell points (SP) to cast. Some spells target enemies (damage, incapacitation), some target allies (healing, attribute modification), and some raise or banish undead creatures.

If you run out of SP, you cannot cast spells until your points are restored (via the church blessing, leveling up, or waiting for the next day's reset).

Scrolls

Scrolls are single-use items that contain a spell. Press E during combat to read a scroll from your inventory. The scroll is consumed after use. Unlike casting a spell with K, reading a scroll does not cost any SP.

[5.6]

Default Actions

Each member can have a default action set. This is the action taken when you press D during combat. The default is a regular attack, but you can set it to cast a specific spell automatically. This speeds up combat when you have a preferred tactic for each member.

Combat Outcomes

After combat ends, the results are tallied:

OutcomeDetails
ExperienceAwarded based on the damage your members dealt and the enemies they defeated. Knocking out or killing a stronger enemy awards more experience.
GoldMay be looted from defeated monsters.
ItemsMay be found on defeated enemies.
Clan pointsAwarded or deducted (see section 18.1).
If all your members are knocked unconscious or killed, you lose the battle. Dead members lose a small percentage of their maximum hit points permanently and must be resurrected at the church (see section 11.3). Unconscious members recover after the battle but must also be revived at the church if you want them at full strength.
